SKIN is here! We’ve been working on this production since March and at the end of this month all will finally be revealed. It’s a large scale work, running for four hours, restarting every hour on the hour, with no breaks for the actors. In our preparation for this we’ve studied the work and method of Marina Abramović, the famous Serbian performance artist who sat in the Museum of Modern Art in New York for three months gazing into the eyes of anybody who chose to sit in front of her. We’ve also looked at the work of German choreographer Pina Bausch, and the training methods of Tadashi Suzuki and Anne Bogart.

Each member of the Actors Ensemble has delved deep into their own understanding of themselves and where they sit in the world amongst others. We’ve interrogated what it means to be human and the effects of being exposed – vulnerability, courageousness, connection. This performance takes the viewer on a journey that gradually exposes what it means to be human; literally and metaphorically. It will be performed alongside an exhibition exploring nakedness at the National Portrait Gallery. We’ve analysed each portrait in the development of this piece, however we’ve taken our greatest stimulus from the title itself – Bare: Degrees of undress. This production is free of charge, so we look forward to seeing all CYTers down there to experience some very thought provoking theatre.

Semester Two Workshops began again last week, at Gorman Arts Centre, in our primary schools and at a new venue, the Tuggeranong Arts Centre, where the Tuggeranong Ensemble have joined the CYT community. It was great to see so many smiling and energetic people last week, including our wonderful tutors who recently spent a Saturday afternoon in C Block theatre sharing games, activities and ideas for end of semester performances. It was very inspiring and exciting to welcome a number of amazing new tutors to our flock.

Sadly, I have to tell you that our fabulous Workshop Co-ordinator Samantha is leaving us. Sam is moving to the UK in September to have amazing adventures and meet as many of the cast members in Harry Potter as possible! We will all miss her terribly but luckily we still have a month of fun with her, so drop in to the CYT office and say goodbye!

Dead Mens Wars is getting closer, auditions have been held and casting will be announced soon. Don’t forget to save a date between October 14th – 17th to see the show at The Street Theatre, it is going to be huge!
